Let's Celebrate New Years!

As the year comes to a close, I appreciate the opportunity I've been granted to reflect on my past year. And what stands out the most is the distance between the goals I've set out at the top of the year and what I've accomplished during the year. Every year people across the globe use New Years Day to kick off a new start to their lives. We see people sharing New Year's Resolutions that confess a person's pitfalls while concurrently sharing that same person's strategy to better this pitfall. Many of those same people evaluate the difference between their New Year's goal and their year-end's actuality. Like myself, we grow briefly disappointed with ourselves only to become motivated to do the same thing at the top of the next year. But why should I have to wait until a New Year to begin bettering myself? One should always be in pursuit of betterment irregardless of the season known for new starts. I'd like to encourage you to begin your new start today! (I am. =P)

Family...

Thank God for Thanksgiving Day; a day where the environment is conducive for reflection. As I reflect on the things I have to be thankful for, I think about my family. My family has been on my side through successes, failures, wins, losses, good times, and bad times. I wouldn't be able to grow from my failures or enjoy my successes if my family didn't give me the foundation of a strong value system. For that, I am thankful for those soldiers who've stayed on my side. I love you family!

Tunnel Vision

Staring at a dark night painted by translucent clouds and saddened thoughts, I write… How dumb was I to preach that complacency could constitute ones demise, only to later make complacency my home. You know they say the bigger you are the harder you fall and here I am at the peak of my game getting up with blood shot eyes and a scarred face. I made complacency my home, and now it seems that this lovely abode has turned into a dark tunnel with a dim light of hope in my hindsight… Fuck… I should turn around and take off in a full out sprint towards this light but I don’t want to… All I want is a new starting line.

How Much Can We Blame the TSA?

Recently the Travel Security Agency (TSA) stripped a young boy of his shirt and dignity in Salt Lake City, Utah in response to what investigators are still attempting to find out. The video was posted on YouTube over the weekend and received over 715,000 views before the weekend ended. The story goes on to say that the innocent little boy was stripped and humiliated as a result of the TSA's impractical screening procedures. It has many over the nation fired up with many blogs posts and articles aiming ridiculing the TSA and videos by CNN portraying TSA officials as users of their power for covert, sexually ulterior intentions. However, its important for America to step back and really assess the situation. America would find that this situation was largely constituted by the vested power into the TSA to prevent future drug smuggling and terrorist attack attempts.

Thinking back to the 1990s, there weren't many stories like the aforementioned in the media. Even after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, stories as such weren't pervading as heavily. Now we see headlines such as "TSA airport screeners gone wild in San Diego- again", "TSA pats down a screaming toddler", "TSA Screening Soaks Bladder Cancer Survivor with His Own Urine" and even "TSA Makes Cancer Victim Remove Prosthetic Breast." This is all a result of our vested power into the TSA.

To examine overly endowed characters of various folktales and war stories, we notice a pattern: an over-endowment of power resulting in a lessened respect for morality and logic. Think of the actions of Gilgamesh when he was portrayed as an insurmountable king and Hitler when he began to kill off Jews for the rise of the Aryan race. Both began to exemplify unethical and seemingly illogical actions as a result of their immense amount of power.

Its as if too much power can pull one out of touch with humility, and create a mindset within that individual that places itself above the critique of others. Its as if that individual is no longer subject to questioning (to themselves). With this, many ideas and actions go untampered--resulting in the the execution of some thoughts and actions without screening. However it is this screening that is vital to our everyday prudence and good citizenship, because it helps us winnow our thoughts towards the right decision.

Some officials of the TSA have realized the power vested into them by the American people and may have gotten out of touch with their subconscious screening processes. As American people, we can't blame them too much, because as always, we're part of the problem.

... I'm Back

In English 250 we have presentations that we must "breathe new life" into texts we have already read. Today, my classmate exposited the story of Sundjata and the supplemental movie, Keita, to prove the importance of an exile. His message was that in exile one inevitably takes time to reflect, and gaze deep within introspection. From this, that person will have been enlightened from their own experiences and will become a step closer to fully elucidating their life's dharma. Being away from this blog was like an exile. My reasoning was frivolous, and not well thought out. I was afraid of too many people beginning to understand my train of thought, and assumed that quitting cold turkey would some way help my personal and professional advancement. I was wrong.

While I attempted to better to myself, I only truly attempted to conform. I had gotten away from the initial premise of my blog to express my thoughts irregardless of how they complemented this society's world-views. Reality is... I am heretical, and while I was so focused on transforming into the token child of the business world, I am glad this exile has taught me that it's never necessary to embrace conformity; yet, it's always important to embrace contentment. With that, "I'm back on my blog shit" (Wiz Khalifa)--harder than ever. Good Morning World. Your troubled child is back with my ass in the air, ready to wipe it with your opinions.

No More Pain...

Shout out to Chris Keys

"...Cause I'm back now with something to prove... | Everything to gain, pimpin'. Nothing to lose!..." I'd say repeatedly over T.I.'s track "I Cant Quit". The whole Trap Muzik album has been my soundtrack ever since it was released. I've always used it as a catalyst to my productivity  whenever I'm in get-something-done mode. However, this time a dark cloud of unfulfilled desires rained on my parade.

Is Humility Required to Remain Preponderant?

I often wonder what is the root of jealously so I can counter it's growth in others before it begins to blossom. I find that those whom I previously called my close friends are not even my associates anymore ever since I have began endeavoring to greater things. This separation seems sequential. As I left them behind academically and professionally, I eventually left them behind socially. Never were these things intentional but with hope to be inspirational. Now, reflecting on these things I've realized that I did influence something in my peers, just not what I had imagined; I sparked some attempts to bring me down internally.

PWC eXpedition 2010

They say all things are appreciated deeeper when you have either lost something or came close to losing something. Well, this belief can be applied to my position towards the premier PWC eXpedition experience. There were a number of things that almost blocked my attendance, but when I arrived I was immediately appreciative of the environement.

Attitude...

Wiser words from Paw Paw always hit deep. Today the simplicity of his argument hit even deeper. I guess the phrase "less is more"  is best exemplified when my Paw Paw is attempting to prove a point. He sat me down and we touched on Lindsay, drugs, rehab, planes, interpersonal skills, and attitudes. Ironically, the latest of the topics seem to hit home the most.

You're Better Than Most

My only hope... is for you to be able to elevate your standards above their expectations.

Mac Miller...

Witty syntax, thoughtful punchlines, and creative beats all seem to converge when Mac Miller takes the mic. This 18 year old rapper from Pittsburgh, PA is the newest member of the Rostrum Records label. "It's a good situation here at Rostrum, I love the team around me and I'm prepared for a very bright future" Mac tells Hip Hop Press. His future seems to be already bright with over 500,000 views on his Youtube for his top 5 videos and collabos with the emerging star, Wiz Khalifa. This Tuesday Mac Miller will be on the Hip Hop Noise special with Devin Hester and Tom Hasby. Tune in to Pittburgh area's own WPTS 92.1  at 8 pm or listen online for this exclusive interview. Enjoy...

Passenger Plane Crashes

An estimated 152 people died this morning in a Pakistan plane crash. I knew none of them but this hit me hard this morning. This is me sending my condolences out to all of the families who have had to bear a deeper hurt in response to this crash. I wish you all well. May peace and prosperity enrich the rest of your lives. Don't blame the Pilot, Airblue, or your creator. The plane simply lost signal with the airport towers.

Google BOLD Immersion 2010

Late last week I had the pleasure of attending Google's BOLD Immersion program. BOLD is an acronym for Building Opportunities for Leadership and Development in which Google has mastered. Using an uncanny method of teaching, Google has blessed me with knowledge of Google products, creativity enhancers, and team building skills that I'd receive no where else. Only to sweeten the deal, my team won the case competition and was rewarded a free all expense paid trip to the GOOGLEPLEX in Mountain View, California!

Safer Sex. Poorer Nation.

Today I came across a new gel that decreases the chances of women getting AIDS by as much as 51% if used before and after sex. Last week an article was published about a new vaccination rids 91% of HIV within the body. Realizing an erupting pattern, I wonder if these discoveries are actually good for our economy. Although these discoveries won't be applicable to the body for a few years, the mere promulgation of their existence ensures one that there is more safety in unprotected sex. Therefore heightening the sex usage rate, birth rate, and poverty rate amongst Americans.

Posture Is a Leadership Skill

I've found that releasing my thoughts here allows them to escape from the scratched track in my head. Before I begin to expose my noggin, allow me to say that even the most distinguished "scholars" state the obvious in their most praised works. Meaning that this epiphany is very basic, far from profound and could have been discovered by an infant. However, I must get this out of my head. Observation has shown me that posture conveys power. It's something about fridgid necks, balanced heads, and cocked shoulders that scream "respect me". While passive necks, tilted heads, and hunched backs confiscate any respectful impulses.

Today Was A Good Day

Ice Cube - Today Is A Good Day

What’s better than a baked bean sandwich with barbecue sauce and ground beef? One thing: my day. Today started early with intense studying and nature sounds. For some odd reason the sounds of bird calls and trickling water increase my capacity to consume knowledge when I’m alone. When it was time to put this consumption to test, I waxed my test in 37 minutes tops. I felt like a beast. Much like the feeling I had during high school cross country. The peaceful sight of the sun setting on a calm lake during a mild summer night compelled me take a jog. . . . Accomplished, I felt. So I read up on some articles as I stretched the pains away. The news of a company I may be working with in the near future, J.P. Morgan, increasing 2nd quarter profits significantly, the capping of the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill, and the Senate passage of the Financial Overhaul Bill made me even happier. The realization that I predicted all this to happen during this time early last month accentuated my beast mode. Today I didn’t climb the Great Wall of China but I did accomplish happiness. Ironic how it coins with my studies of the Buddhist culture.

Big Sean - Bullshitting

It was long awaited... but I expected more.

Shabazz on Gerald = Frivolous.

W.E.B. DuBois talked about "double consciousness" in which he spoke of the Negro's ability to have different personalities in different settings. However, I do not believe that he was referring to such an inconsistency of one's character. Malik Zulu Shabazz says that he is concerned with the betterment of black people yet uses rhetoric that encourages more violence and a warlike mentality. He uses fiery language similar to such of Malcolm X yet Shabazz's usage is untimely. His language includes the observation of the black plight but condones the black perpetuation of the plight. It also alludes to a "division" between blacks and whites but concurrently encourages further separation. Shabazz has slowly chiseled away at the little respect that many held for him. This video destroyed whatever was left.

A Better Alternative

Have you ever felt like an ultimatum has withheld you from making a decision. In fact, you'd prolong making the decision because you were afraid to commit to one for the sacrifices being made for the other? You'll often hope that you come across an alternative that will allow you calibrate the two. Well, I have decided to take on a pledge that Graham Hill proposes: a weekday vegetarian. While the benefits of vegetarianism are obvious, the benefits of being a partial vegetarian are even more bountiful. Check it out:

For This Or That..Or That?

It was seven of us. All seated... in chairs, the bed, the computer desk, and a few standing to create a deformed circle. What we were about to do was unprecedented, well for me anyways. Sights of the bong and sounds of the blunt in preparation increased my anxiety to finally get elevated. I suppressed that anxiety for the sake of my coolness and waited patiently for my turn.

Fight Sajjad! FIGHT!!

Envision yourself helplessly watching your mother cry out for help while getting whipped 99 times for adultery. How about speaking to your mother only 15 mins a week for five years. Once those five years have passed, imagine attempting to get your mother off a death-by-stone sentence from a harsh, inconsiderate, and assumptive gov't. Can' t can you.

Unfortunately, Sajjad Mohammedie Ashtiani doesn't have the capacity to snap out of this imagery; it is is reality.  He is on a mission to free his mother from something she is getting re-punished for after an inconsiderately heartless judge suggested that she should be further punished, five years later. Sajjad is attempting to obtain a letter from the only two men who can stop this, supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei and Judiciary Chairman Sadegh Larijani. His help advocate says that external pressure and support from gov'ts from Europe and America will help catalyze this process. He asks if we can all spread the word. Please.

Obama, You Are Not Kobe.

Are you serious? I appreciate you thriving on the notion that "anything helps" but at some time you have to stop teasing the unemployed. After all, the reason you exposited that mini speech was in response to the loss of Census jobs (another teaser). Our unemployment rate is back to where it was last November. True enough we are on a slow track to recovery but on the track that we are traveling, we are soon to become a completely govt employed country. Through these broadband internet expansion projects, you will create more jobs that are not only temporary ad govt owned. Why not pass the ball, Kobe, and invest in companies to privately hire people to work on these projects? Just because Kobe got a ring by leading his team off an air of selfishness doesn't mean the govt can do the same thing.

Teach Me to Teleport

I'm reminded of a time where my mom almost died in my arms. This day, to no surprise, was the day I understood my role as the self acclaimed "man of the house". I was quickly endowed with duties no 16 year old should have to take up. I remember I looking deep into her eyes only to see her soul absent from within. Her head hung low with no strength or energy to raise it herself. Suddenly, my little brother bursts into tears and inadvertently exacerbates the situation. As bad as I wanted to join him , I abstained; fore it was up to me to save my mother's life.

I don't think it was a good publicity move for Tyler Perry.

Boredom...

Staring out of a window illuminated by an orange glow from the street lights, I write. Writing seems to liberate me. It allows me to go places I've never been and kart-wheel in the midst of phantasmagorias. However, sometimes I encounter this hurdle of writers block which can only be overcame by "keeping on", as my grandmother would say so... I write. Looking frantically in various directions for an intangible key to a treasury of thoughts, I find nothing to alarm my sensory. That is until I stumble upon the floor.

What  I find is a weird shadow of my grandmothers "decorative masterpiece". It's saturated in the window's reverberation of the street light yet housed by the uncanny shape of the window. Happily I smile, fore my inspiration has just come! But sadly that was short lived....

Russian Spies Caught

Growing up, I loved to see the spy movies. Something about the way they lived a dualistic live of normality and adventure kept me on my toes! However, it wasn't until today that it occurred to me that true spies exist. The New York Times published an article today promulgating Anna Chapman, Mikhail Semenko, and 9 others' secret lives as spies for the Russian government.

Intelligence... yeah sure.

Intelligence: the capacity to acquire and apply knowledge, the faculty of thought and reason, and/or superior powers of mind (1). So who is really "intelligent"? Often times we think of intelligence with a correlation to maturation. We think of some one who is intelligent as one who has traveled the journey to higher learning. What I've noticed is that there is no destination to this journey.

Death Did Us Part... There's Good In It, However

"Ya know, son, a lot of times we don't show appreciation for the one's we care for until it's too late" a stranger/relative told me at my granddaddy's funeral. I replied acquiescently while I allowed that thought to marinate my my thoughts. Now, three years later, that saying reverberates uncontrollably in my head. Last night I received news that I lost a good friend of mine, Khalifah Muhammad, due to a car accident in which his brother passed as well. This news followed the news I received three days earlier that my Spelman sister, Tiana "Tink" Kindred, passed the same way.

Amid all my reminiscing, I questioned the creator. Why would he do this? Why now? Is there a message for me in this? How could I possibly be more personable when I can't predict the longevity of one's existence in my life?
Questions racing across my head, I paused to deeply to delve deeper into the penultimate question.

These were two very positive --and fun to be around-- individuals. They passed, to me of course, to serve as an example to their peers. Nowadays, teens drive recklessness; I know I do. I'm gonna take this as a message to drive safer and show deeper appreciation to my inner circle. If you knew these two, I hope you can find a message in this as well.

Jessica Revealed...

Dark skin, radiant complexion, welcoming smile, seemingly elusive hair, and make up to accentuate the dimples that compliment her smile. She dresses in the finest of luxuries and unintentionally demands the spotlight in any setting, only because she has to. See Jessica’s pride is driven by the unspoken confirmations of positive perceptions people have of her. For that reason, she is very skeptical about what she allows to be associated with her name and even iffier about who’s to get close to her.

What is "Cool"?

What is it about the pursuit of popularity that makes it such an intricate, frustrating and hopeless journey? Is it a lack of swag? Lack of true friends? Lack of sex? It seems as if you can never have the right amount of --[insert whatever you’re lacking]-- to satisfy your social needs. Like, popularity cannot be attained solely by being you. People have to actually like you! Many seem to sacrifice who they really are to adapt to the interests of others. They fear that being too different will only backfire on them. After all, deviation from the norm does only results in ridicule (Quote Me). Ironically, to thrive within the corridors of coolness one must have that distinguishing factor that will sustain his or her membership amongst the coolness elites. So with all this said sacrificing, are you telling me that a small sense of uniqueness is still needed? Damn skippy.

So, not too long ago I went to the Varsity with my friend Tay Peezy. We chopped it up about a bunch of randoms and started doing random things like vandalizing the resturaunts property with the resturaunts property. lol It started with a nice picture emoticon in which we decided to name him Ed.

Then Tay decided it would be smart if Ed could walk. So we gave him legs. I figured Ed was waaaaaaaay flier than what we drew him up to be. So what could give Ed the trajectory trait better than balloons

Now he was ready for take off.... Let's name this flight now

Help: FedEx Alert

My friend from FedEx needs your help!  Here's what she emailed me:

I also wanted to catch up with you to get your opinion on a matter. FedEx will serve as a sponsor of the United Negro College Fund’s City Empower Me Tour in Minneapolis this summer. It will be a two-day event attended by app. 15,000 high school and elementary students, and their parents. As a sponsor, FedEx will have a 30 x 30 booth and our coordinator has been asked to identify an activity to take place within our booth space. Their choices are the Guitar Hero display, a putt-putt golf game, and a Build-A-Bear activity (which will mainly attract younger kids and their parents). The coordinator is particularly interested in Guitar Hero, however, she’s concerned that the playlist (which cannot be changed) may not be the best genre for a young, predominantly African-American crowd. I’ve attached the playlist for your thoughts. As a college student, would this activity appeal to you and your friends? If not, what activities have you witnessed that work particularly well for African-American teens?

Many thanks for your insights – which are always great!!!

Teasers Must Follow Through!

Nothing eats me up more than a tease that doesn't follow through. You know, the inexperienced girl who wants to portray the skillfulness of a sexual beast; the one that hopes to gain the same attention, without doing the same work!

Was He Wrong?

Recently, controversy has arose within the Seattle city limits. An officer, firstly, arrested a female wrongly then continued on to punched her cousin in the face with no remorse. Many people are weighing in on this situation and saying that he was out of line, twice: he should be arrested himself. However Seattle's Police Dept. only gives this officer "extra training". Do you think he was out of line? Was his punishment unjust? What should his punishment have been?

Did you know the "Rosie" was deadly?

Excuse my ignorance if I may be a little late but did you know that the lovely melody "Ring around the Rosy" is pertinent to the Bubonic Plague of 1665?

"Ring around the Rosy" refers to the rosy red rash that formed a ring shape on the victims' skins while "Ashes Ashes" referred to the cremation of their bodies after death. James Leasor made this connection in his book The Plague and the Fire (1961).

They Started as Men

As we all know, Japanese geisha are women whose primary responsibility is to entertain men. The word geisha means "art people" or "art doer" and seemingly so, each geisha strives to perfect their everyday actions in an effort to be perfect. They walk on clouds, talk with seductive confidence, dress in utter exquisiteness, and gain unwavering attention in any setting. Although they play the most non-subservient role for women in Japan, they still have the, sometimes, arduous task of pleasing men. This entails dancing, singing, and, sometimes, sexual favors. Will it ever be known to anyone but the geisha and her mate?
