The art of conversation is something that everyone wants to master. Today while chilling with Art Hopkins, President of MacQuarium, I got pretty insightful knowledge on the art of conversation. He says that you should watch how you label your conversations because that determines how you engage in them. One who labels a conversation as discussion is one who listens just enough to have something to reply with. Most times this person is verbally quarrelsome. He says this is due to the etymology of the word. Discussion has the same etymology of Percussion: percussion conveys a visual of something getting beat to receive a pattern of rhythmic, repetitious sounds. In the context of a conversation this is basically a debate or something meaning that the conversation will be a back and forth.
Instead a conversation should be considered as a dialogue. He explains that this conveys a flowery; a river like conversation instead of a drum like conversation. I feel this is a cool way to look at a conversation...just a little food for thought.
